Taught by a combat veteran who still runs the range
Doug Young
Owner, NRA Certified Instructor and Chief Range Safety Officer
Doug is a decorated United States military combat veteran and a federally licensed firearms dealer. He is NRA certified in Basic Pistol, Personal Protection in the Home, Personal Protection Outside the Home, Refuse to be a Victim, and as a Chief Range Safety Officer.
He teaches the class the way he would want his own family taught. Small groups, real coaching on the firing line, and time to ask the questions people are usually embarrassed to ask. If you do not own a pistol yet, he brings four different models to class so you can shoot all of them and find out what actually fits your hand.

What our students say
Instructors are razor sharp, nice, helpful and the renewal course was better in person than online, easy and done quickly!!
This class is very informative and Will puts things in Layman’s Terms. The class goes pretty quickly and you take a lot of good information away but, you never feel rushed. If you have questions, they are answered wit…
Will was a phenomenal teacher explained everything well and was super attentive when we were in the range
Questions students ask
Does this class count for my Michigan CPL?
Yes. It is the NRA Personal Protection Inside the Home course, which the State of Michigan recognizes for the concealed pistol license. It runs eight hours, including the three hours of range time the state requires.
Do I need my own pistol?
No. Registration is $110 on your own, or $125 with a rental pistol and ammunition included. If you bring your own, any caliber works except magnum, and you will want two magazines and 100 rounds.
Do I need any experience?
None. We cover how a pistol works from the beginning, so first-time shooters are in the right place.
What should I bring?
A pad and a pen, a valid state ID, and your pistol if you own one. Bring it cased and unloaded, with no ammunition in the classroom. Coffee, water, pop and a hot lunch are provided.
Where is the class held?
Linwood Bay Sportsman Club, 1643 E. Linwood Rd, Linwood, MI 48634. It is a short drive from Bay City, Saginaw, Midland and Standish, and the range is indoors.
When do I get my certificate?
At the end of class the same day, so you can go to the county clerk and apply right away.
